I’ll be real - Atlanta, New Orleans, Nashville, Charleston, etc are all flooded with tourists and immigrants. Now this isn’t me being racist, I’m not even from the South- but there’s a huge difference between these cities that LARP as Southern to tourists and cities in the countryside that genuinely don’t have to. It’s a real shame how the culture has changed in the South, and it’s sad that most foreigners don’t realize that. So I don’t blame residents for recognizing that.

Weird how that sounds super racist now huh?

I draw the line when you start deliberately targeting people to exclude on the basis of their race or culture.

Also, preventing other people from experiencing a culture does not protect it.

Easy. You stop using “protecting culture” as a racist dog whistle. You protecting culture by preserving landmarks, education, helping families survive economically, having festivals and national support. You don’t do it by deliberately targeting people based on race or race-adjacent qualities. BTW most racism in the world has DECIMATED native culture. Including Japan, with the Ainu.

The only one that is relevant is Kyoto and New Orleans which both have cramped historical areas that can be an issue with too many tourists.

The point of this comment was not to draw a comparison between these 4 cities. I just picked 4 well known southern cities.

I know, but there is a real issue with small historical cities like with Venice where tourists can swamp a city that can’t really handle it.
