Republicans admit the GOP’s midterm forecast is bleak. But they’re clinging to two hopes: voters’ fear and loathing of Democrats.

“It’s going to be a hate election,” a Republican tied to President Trump’s political operation told Axios. “Voters have to hate the Dems more than they hate us. And we have material to work with.”

Why it matters: There’s broad GOP frustration that Trump has made challenging midterm elections worse by not focusing heavily on pocketbook issues — especially the tax cuts Republicans won — while launching the Iran war, which raised gas prices and fueled inflation.

Trump’s prime-time speech Thursday night about China’s alleged influence campaign targeting U.S. voters six years ago did little to assuage those concerns.

“I have yet to understand how we win the midterms by talking about what happened in 2020,” Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) told Axios.

The Republicans’ plan will probably work too. Hate is the opiate of the masses. Some say its religion, but religion is merely a syringe.

    The falsehood was that the election was lost because a large number of people decided “both sides are the same.” That is a comforting lie.

    I never said that. I’m talking about people still trying to set the fence 20 months after the results of the election. 2024 has come and gone and there’s not much use deliberating over why or how she lost. Because I think what’s happening in 2025 onward will affect elections much more than re-living 2024. Trying to argue “Kamala said that” as if she’s wrong because she lost doesn’t help your argument (especially when many of her predictions came true anyway).

    So yeah, if you’re in 2026 still arguing “both sides are the same”, you picked your side.

    Some people just have different ethical systems than you do.

    1. Everything Kamala said turned out to be true (yes, I’m exaggerating. But the big predictions are turning out true)
    2. I’m tired of being gaslit by people who want to pretend they are enlightened centrists (this is a subjective call, but not tied to any particular political party. this can apply to Trump, Bush, Kamala, or Epstein)
    3. Be much better if people could be the bigger person, admit “yeah this was worse than I ever expected” (a call to action to centrists or right wing people who have soured on Trump[). This is a bit more political because it’s targeted at Trump’s policies, but ultimately is trying to make those with voter regret honest. If you have no regrets and think Trump is doing a good job, you would never say “this is worse than I expected”)

    That’s all I’m saying. I also literally said “I’m not here to gloat, I want problems fixed”, so thanks for ignoring that.
