    indoor plumbing didn’t become widely available until after WW1, and it wasn’t until after WW2 that it was universal.

      That’s what my grandmother and I used for the first 5 years of my life. For toilet paper we used the Sears catalog. (this was in the early 70’s, the catalog came mostly similar to newspaper except the middle 10 pages or so were the glossy color ones which do not work for that purpose.)

      It really wasn’t bad, except in the winter. Canadian winters and outhouses are a special experience… you did not dawdle when on one of those missions.
