Growing up in a time where seeking mental health was heavily stigmatized, I haven’t sought any professional help for this. “Man up” and “Tough it out” was the rule for anything short of broken bones.
You are not the first to suggest getting help, but are the first who’s had similar experience.

Good on you for admitting you need help. For what it’s worth DBT has been helping my wife stop waking up in terror in the middle of the night as much if you’re interested in non chemical solutions (neither course is bad)
