We had this in our country too. Something along the lines of “These cameras will only ever be used to search for wanted criminals by their license plates”. And guess what? Now they are used for tracking, checking phone usage, checking seatbelts, etc.
This is the reason privacy advocates tell you that even the smallest of infringements on our privacy and freedom will be abused. You can’t give them a hand because they take your whole arm. And worst of all? All this infrastructure is an extremely powerful weapon if abused by fascists, so even with the best of intentions, future politicians can decide to use the weapon to find and punish anybody who they dislike. Just look at the US how fast their democracy got raped.
