I can’t vibe with anything lyrics-centered. So rap is almost entirely out for me, and most pop and indie-rock too.
Velvet Underground is the only band to whose lyrics I actively listen or read them. Lou Reed had a particular style of writing, with very simple words and imagery, that works great for me. E.g. ‘Candy Says’ or ‘I’m Sticking With You’. Nico, who sang for VU on their first album, also has some great songs: e.g. ‘These Days’ and ‘The Fairest of the Seasons’, both written by Jackson Browne (and the latter also by Gregory Copeland).
Well, you are naming Lou Reed and Nico, two of the best artists in the history. HipHop isn’t all lyrics, I also tend to minimize lyricism (I’m not even english native), I listen to the music and you still have some of the best album in the world like Public Enemy’s It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back (absurd hardcore productions) or A Tribe Called Quest’s The Low End Theory (which is peak boombap in my opinion).
I love instrumental hiphop, particularly most things from Ninja Tune. I’ve gotten through the mid-late 2000s almost entirely on a diet of Ninja Tune and Bill Laswell.
