A new book describes how cutting-edge genomics techniques yielded “extraordinary proof” that Thomas Jefferson fathered children with Sally Hemings.
Basically, a big chunk of the profits of slavery came from rape and being able to sell the resulting kids.
I thought this was already a settled fact. They’ve been open about this at Monticello since like the 90s.
For those who don’t know, Thomas Jefferson rapped Sally Hemmings starting when she was about 14 and he was 42, he continued to rape her for the rest of his life. They produced children who were sold.
I’ve always wondered what one does with the proceeds of a sold child. It’s got to go straight into the bank right? You can’t treat yourself. “Hey, nice golf clubs”, “Thanks, they used to be my daughter”.
It was pretty settled, but this is another line of evidence that’s a bit more direct than the past ones
