Honestly its because cinema as an art is so comparatively new and with that comes a ton of firsts which when that show aired hollywood was what like 30 years old, with an entire networking infrastructure was one giant bottleneck funneling down to like 3-10 total poc for the entire country and/or world to consume. Add that all uo and got the first ever nation wide captivation of the “will they wont they” success story. Before that aired, the next longest any existance of this concept lasted for was like 3 or 4 plays abiut the same character, or a running narrative thru multiple books in a series. All of which were dwarfed when color tv and cable hit america. Every single person from all walks of life, all cultures, all ages, all sexes, every single redundantly described person all fuckjng watched the exact same shows at the exact same time slots on the exact same stations or they literally never got to go back to watch it until the network ran reruns or it hit vhs. Sure there were other shows with other iterations of will they wont they success but Whos the Boss was the first show that basically revolved the show around the trope and put it center stage. The internet didnt exasperate and certainly didnt cause the rise of social hiveminds like many like to claim. The internet was just the first resource that gave people the ability to see outside their metaphorical hivemend matrix they live in. Pack mental8ty mother fucker its fundamental mother nature shit homie.

So what you’re saying is, the will they won’t they trope was pretty new at the time and not as cliche and annoying as it is now
It wasn’t new, it was just expected.
