      Place your thumb against the tip of your little finger. This is 1. Move down the fingers for 2 and 3. Repeat on the ring finger for 4, 5, and 6. The middle finger covers 7, 8, and 9 while the index finger covers 10, 11, and 12. On your other hand, place the tip of your thumb against the tip of your little finger. This is now 12. Moving down gives you 24 and 36 as the right hand continues. This is a pretty slick way to track data up to 144 occurrences without worrying about losing count, provided that you can hold your hands in the correct position.

        I knew I had seen something like this before!!! As soon as you started describing this it immediately clicked. I had an Indian friend show me this in college in the early 90s.
