There’s quite some Anime movies I like more than Princess Mononoke (Perfect Blue, Wolf Children, Ghost in the Shell…) but it’s undoubtedly a masterpiece. That’s the one that should be the spearhead of Ghibli, not Spirited Away.
Just wanted to say Perfect Blue is a masterpiece. I remember showing it to a friend of mine in college, and afterwards, she looked at me and went, “In one of my film classes, they showed us how to show time passing in a movie, and that movie fucked with every single one of them.”
Truly a masterpiece. Shame it’s the least known Kon movie and it got a BD/streaming release in very few countries, in mine you either go to sketchy sites or buy the used DVD for 150€. Deserves way more recognition.
Animation peaked in the early 2000s? That is ridiculous, it’s more popular now than ever, with storylines and art at least as complicated and beautiful as 20 years ago.
You just have a favorite movie from that time.
Or their taste just differs from yours?
Why try to overwrite someone’s opinion man :(
In my comment, I specifically accept their opinion that princess mononoke is one of the best movies ever made, I’m disagreeing with their assertion that the entire genre of animation peaked at the same time one of their favorite movies was made.
That’s completely ridiculous.
That’s like if you really liked The matrix and stated “you know what, movies peaked in 2000.”
If you read the count of monte Cristo and then said “books really peaked in 1844.”
No, they didn’t, you just like that thing.
Don’t make such a broad and absolute statement if you can’t deal with criticism.
There is no difference between saying Princess Monoke is one of the finest movies ever made and saying that animation peaked in the 2000s.
They are both examples of hyperbolic statements we all use to illustrate how passionately we hold our opinions.
The only difference between them is that you agreed with one and not the other, so it’s a bit intellectually dishonest to go into an emotional argument challenging exaggerated opinions as though they were true statements, particularly when you pick and choose which ones you decide to take literally.
If I’m wrong and you really did see the latter as a statement, it’s not a statement proveable by any metric which immediately makes you the easy victor and makes the other person look foolish.
At best it’s a cheap win but at worst, frankly, it’s unkind. It’s okay to just disagree; it holds no bearing on the validity of your own opinions.
There is a difference between saying you like the color red and saying colors peaked at red.
You’re right that an absolute statement is unprovable, which makes the claim ridiculous and overreaching.
As to your seemly defense of opinions, you all seem to split hairs on which opinions you take issue with.
I understood what you meant, but saying “no actually you just really liked that movie and haven’t found anything since” is presumptuous.
I’m capable of criticism - not sure what made you think I couldn’t handle discourse when all I said was “don’t put words in their mouth”
That is not what I said, and that is not what you said; both of your quotes are inaccurate.
Your wording of my quote is inaccurate and you made yours up completely.
You said: “Why try to overwrite someone’s opinion man :(”
I didn’t try to overwrite someone’s opinion, I agreed with their opinion on princess Mononoke and I’m correcting their overreaching comment that casually denigrates all forms and examples of animation before and after the early 2000s.
Why try to overwrite my opinion, man?
You literally just used the word corrected which is what I meant by overwriting.
Nobody needs you to “correct” them about their own fucking opinion
If OP is going to insult an entire genre of media, they should support their claim and be prepared for criticism.
I’m sure they appreciate your white knighting though.
As for you, make your mistakes, but don’t complain to others that they answer what you said rather than what you say you thought.
Great job ignoring all my points, bringing up a random point we weren’t even discsussing, calling me a lame ass name, and also managing to completely make up how I was upset you responded to me somehow
I think you’re out of ammo and we’re done here. The fact that you felt the need to correct someone’s opinion says leagues about you and who you are.
Goodbye and best of luck to you in the future.
