🦉A Fierce Great Horned Owl ❤️

This Great Horned Owl (GHO) found herself in quite a predicament when she managed to get into a chicken coop and couldn’t find her way back out. The finder reached out to her friend Leigh, one of our Capture & Transport permitted volunteers, for help. During the rescue, it became clear that the owl had a serious eye injury.

According to Leigh, she was the most fierce Great Horned Owl she had ever captured! That feisty spirit would certainly come in handy on the road ahead.

The owl was transported to Dawn, a licensed vet tech and sub-permittee of Tamarack Wildlife Center (TWC), for immediate care. Her journey then included a trip to Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh (HAR) for surgical removal of the injured eye, followed by a return trip to Dawn to continue her recovery. After completing her antibiotics and passing her flight exam, she was finally ready to go home!

Leigh and Dawn shared the honor of releasing her fairly close to where she was found, giving her the opportunity to return to familiar territory… And true to form, this fierce girl wasn’t about to cooperate with any photo or video plans! 😂 She quickly flew towards the treetops and disappeared from sight.

A huge thank you to Leigh, Dawn, TWC, and HAR for helping this determined owl get her second chance at freedom!

That’s got to be frustrating for them. I know I was happy to see something about Germans other than the typical WW2 stuff, and it’s a shame they didn’t see more of a story in the actual history. The guy was fun in that video as well. I watched a related video but it had the AI dubbed voice and was rough after hearing him speak English on his own.

They only have a few English videos. And the

      AI dubbed voice

is YT’s new strategy to keep you interested. It’s likely not the channel’s choice but automatically chosen by YT for your “viewing pleasure”. 😅

I encountered the same “helpful service” when watching original English content. You should be able to select subtitles and the original audiotrack through the menu ⚙️.

I am so beyond frustrated with Youtube anymore.

All these UI changes and they have the Chromecast integration so beyond screwed up it’s practically painful to cast things to my tv. And the integration with Home has been screwed up for months now, where it says it will rewind or jump ahead but it does nothing. Get your dang act together, Google! 🤨

I had been hoping it was an actual dub person/group doing it, like the Garage 54 videos are all pretty monotone and lifeless, but they make sense and the pronunciation is good.

I know they can do better, on my phone I’ve watched German animal videos before and my Android live translates the captions and it’s fine. There is just such a lack of refinement across the board right now, and such a downgrade of the whole product line from just a few months to a year ago. I’ll have to play with the language and sub setting and see what I can get going. I’m glad to find interesting creators in whatever language as long as it isn’t more of the rampant AI content I keep getting spammed with by the YT algorithm.

I only watch YT via Firefox with ublock origin. I can’t stand all the bad ad breaks they are subjecting their viewers to. I get that they want to earn some money from their platform but they don’t even create the content. Making me watch a 2 minutes long ad for some questionable coaching won’t bring me to subscribe to any kind of membership.

I’m seconding that it got harder to find interesting creators. Especially since they tweaked their algorithms to push a lot of right extremist content (all about creating traffic - unfortunately a lot of bots in the comment sections) and plain grifters who want to sell overpriced products that often smell like fraud. And the AI content is really horrible. There are so many made up stories that look so bad from their titles and thumbnails alone. And still people don’t recognise it. They should be forced mark it as AI in the title.

This is one of the worst offenders I’ve seen:

We have premium since we watch so much content on the tv, so no ads thankfully, and until recently I hadn’t had an issue supporting the platform.

The zero effort into segregating slop content though is frustrating. I get so annoyed finding an interesting topic to have it be AI, and even so many human narrated videos have AI scripts seeing an actual human isn’t even an indicator anymore.

Facebook is giving me the opposite issue. They allow users to tag AI content now through a right click option, and not sure how/if they verify it, but creators I’m familiar with and animal content I’m 90+% confident is calling real is being tagged by random people as fake, while obvious fake stuff is unlabeled. It’s pissing off some of the photographers really badly, having their legitimacy questioned on every post all of a sudden after years of hard work.

Your thumbnail example is kind of frightening as I could see our dear leader wanting that float, and even the little float of the arch passing through the arch because he wants his dumb victory arch (victory of what even?!) so badly. Man, do I hate our current positioning on the timeline…

Photographers and artists are rightfully angry! First AI companies use their art for training purposes (without paying or even asking) and then people can’t make out the fake content over original work. It’s frustrating.

I’m glad that you’re giving credit to the photographers and doing such a good job to keep out the AI fakes.

Giving the credit up front keeps me from having to say I didn’t take the photo every time…and I guess also keeps me from looking like a big jerk too. 😅

I know I don’t have to patience to take all those photos, do all that hiking and lugging around equipment, and then to sort and edit thousand of photos just to give them away for free! I could never do what they do. They deserve a ton of credit.

Sorting the fakes can be hard too with how powerful editing software is. Like how much can someone edit a real photo before it’s too machine generated? And some software is getting decent at making some realistic looking animals too. I just don’t get who is benefitting from all the slop vs the number of people this is causing issues for.

Yep. It’s getting harder to spot. Whenever there’s a day I think I haven’t spotted AI the survivor bias pic of the plane model with the damage spots pops up in my head.

It is scary how fast the companies made progress. So much potential to cause harm.
