I know this may sound ignorant to modern game development, but do we optimize anymore? I know storage is not an issue most developers worry about these days, but God.
I don’t like to play the old card, because I’m by no means “old”, but I remember when I wanted to install a game, I had to choose what I needed to uninstall first. A game being 500MB to 1GB was mind boggling.
Ugh, installing World of Xeen was tough. Needed to free up a whopping 50 MB of space or so. But at least the install of Darkside of Xeen had some dancing stick figures you could look at while swapping floppies.
On consoles, developers still duplicate assets for HDD optimization (faster loading, more storage). Often they don’t bother to ‘fix’ that for PC when ported.

Add to that the fact that they all need SSD’s so whatever HDD storage you have is useless now.
Given prices of hardware these days devs should definitely be better at this.

The PS5 was supposed to have fixed that duplication issue with it’s SSD and how data from it is retrieved and cached
