But seriously though, the people of Taiwan do not consider themselves to be Chinese.
It’s kind of funny, China acquires regions and demands the people adopt their nationality. Meanwhile, with the US the various states willingly adopted the nationality. Hell Puerto Rican people still have to press that point, in spite of being the 50th state for over 100 years, but they do so willingly - meanwhile the people of Hong Kong do what they can to flee the Chinese invasion.
A lot more folks in Taiwan actually do consider themselves Chinese than something else. Even the party that fought against Mao’s faction and set up shop on Taiwan is more about staying Chinese than being an independent nation. The only folks that are die-hard about being a completely independent nation are the ones that stand to get paid and protected by the US and our military industrial complex that is constantly rolling up on the borders of other nations and make points of playing war games on those borders. But then act like the nations that those games are meant to scare are the assholes for arming up.
Also I seem to always hear that Puerto Rico might actually be kind of past the point of believing that becoming a state would really help. They are constantly left to fend for themselves when huge storms wreak everything. I am willing to bet that the only reason that they are a colony of the US still, is that the US mainland would just invade and put them back down again. Also Hawaii has a fuck ton of native folks that hate that they are a state. They were more or less invaded and enough non-natives came in and those folks wanted statehood and overthrew the Hawaiian government. They already had been turned into the main hub of the Pacific fleet before being a state. So they kind of didn’t really get a choice, and were already overthrown. So it isn’t like they could’ve kicked the US and our greedy capitalists out. They would’ve just been put down and just kept a colony.
And all that isn’t even touching on the lack of choice natives that were already living in what is now the US had. Statehood pushes were made by folks that just showed up and claimed land and were given it by a government that really didn’t have the authority to issue those claims. So China doing everything it can to push out their water borders in order to force the US and our allies farther away isn’t anything other than proactive defense of their own region. Does it mean I always support their choices? No. However it is avoidable if the US were to stop acting like it gets to pick how other nations are allowed to do anything.
It’s not commanded in Taiwan, do you think 50% of the global shipbuilding could be done in a small island? lmao
Furthermore, “Taiwan” is a province of the People’s Republic of China with no separate status according to resolution 2758 of the United Nations:
