I know it’s anecdotal, but if you read writers of that era, a lot of biographies end up with “and he died in a concentration camp”. Or the poet whose last work was the poem “Forced March”. He didn’t make it to the camp, died in a ditch. Most people affected didn’t make it out, and most people didn’t have the courage to help.
