I just finished it. And having played most of them too, it’s middle of the road for me. But that’s just because I’ve really loved a bunch of the games.
Yeah, I love the theme, characters, and story, but it’s hard to appreciate whatever strategy exists in the battle system if you don’t have ninja-like focus and reflexes first. I really wanted to go for a platinum on this game, but decided it’s just not worth the anxiety and stress I’d have to put myself through.
There are accessories that help you dodge. I used them until I got good enough (and high enough level) that I didn’t need it anymore. I personally loved combat once I had a few power sets. My personalized abilities felt perfect.
I actually used all of those extensively, and never got good enough to completely ditch them. Unfortunately there are unlockables that I have no hope of accessing because the handicap accessories themselves are simply not good enough to complete those challenges. I really missed turn-based/hybrid style combat while playing XVI.
Got to say, ff16 is probably the least Final Fantasy game in the series.
Having played almost all of them, the course they’re going is more devil may cry/action RPG than final fantasy. It’s disappointing as a long time fan.
Less than 15?

I did like XVI a lot more than XV’s. But I really wish the series had used XII’s ATB system as a standard going forward.
I really enjoy XII a lot. I wish we could see more done like that, even if it’s a spinoff.
