I do not plan to purchase it from a carrier. Yes, I’m in the US. Is this even possible?

Unfortunately can’t speak for USA. Some carriers allow you to unlock and others don’t. If you don’t buy through carriers then OnePlus has been very easy to unlock. I’ve flashed older Samsung’s. Last few were 8 and 9. Really easy to unlock but carriers can lock them down.

You can always just go into the carrier you want and ask them. They might not know but someone should know.

I have heard that the newer S series mobiles in the US cannot be unlocked even without purchasing it from a carrier?

Would search the ungoogle subs. Pixels are definitely unlockable as lots are flashing graphene os.

Pixels are certainly a good idea, but I’m afraid of trusting Google that much. The community is focussing so much of their efforts into a company that is known to shut things down/make things harder for FOSS

Absolutely. The best unlockable phones used to be OnePlus but I’m no longer sure. Pixels seemed to be pretty good for graphene but as you said it might stop working at some point
