    I think simply, “it was mourning” would work a tad better than in morning. Grammar and jokes can be a nebulous thing, but in this case, the word play works better because the lack of “the” in the original version causes a bit of dissonance that breaks the joke.

    Mind you, that’s only testing the joke on three people other than myself, but they all objected to the structure of the original, and one of those is a teenager that damn near failed English last year.

    See, nobody really says “in morning” to refer to that time of day. It’s “in the morning”. When will you fix breakfast? In the morning, not in morning. See what I mean? For a good joke like this (and it’s fucking brilliant), that kind of dissonance makes it flop.

    And yes, I just wrote three paragraphs about a 4 word pun.
