As stated by Hiroki Totoki in the Q&A with shareholders at Sony Group Website (live.irwebmeeting.com):
- The number of Live Service projects planned to release by FY2025 was reduced from 12 to 6.
- Sony is focusing on projects were they think they will meet quality expectations from gamers.
- They will evaluate the state of the other six projects at a later date.
That sounds reasonable. I know a lot of gamers are not a fan of these types of games but that doesn’t mean there is no audience for them. I hope the 6 that they are working with are going to meet the expectations of those that enjoy them.
I am curious about the Last of Us game in this bunch. I did enjoy their multiplayer component on the original game so an open world multiplayer game may be interesting since I really like that universe but I usually don’t like to play games that take a lot of time and have no story to push me forward.
I wouldn’t be surprised if this got widdled down further. Having 12 in development never meant that they would release 12. They probably have 12 concepts with unique ideas/hooks that they were testing out in hopes of bringing 2-3 to market. That’s my guess.
TLoU was interesting to me since I was hoping there would be some sort of ongoing story with it. I play PS games for the stories, so any live service games would have to hook into that for me
Same here. I do hope they have a story in the world like The Division or something similar. I remember reading that was the concept at first.
I loved the division. The dark zones and the later game bullet sponges not so much, but I loved everything else.
