Actually, yes, the air quality is good in places away from heavy industry. Hainan has some good surfing spots, it’s usually what people think when they think about China beach spots. That said, it’s as expensive as California because it’s one of the few great beach places that Chinese people without a passport can go to (other benefits being everyone speaks Chinese, the food is familiar, etc.).
