Deceptive patterns (also known as “dark patterns”) are tricks used in websites and apps that make you do things that you didn't mean to, like buying or signing up for something.
I like the effort, but I feel like trying so hard to coin a hip new buzz phrase (Dark Patterns) instead of calling it what it is (deceptive marketing practices) is counterproductive.
And “deceptive marketing practices” is too broad. Dark pattern is a subset of that. So the title is being specific, which is something to praise, not criticize.

Right on. I’ve just see it thrown around a bit lately, and I think it just obfuscates the issue.

Agreed, these have been around as long as there were salespeople, just adapted to the Internet.
