VW Group has been all in on supporting these phone-to-car projection solutions. They were an early adopter of CarPlay / Android Auto, they’re listening to customers, and giving them what they want. That also means physical buttons are coming back to their cars after a brief cycle of following Tesla’s touchscreen-only approach in some cars.
I can only hope I get this one day for my ID.3. I’m in CarPlay all the time anyway…I’d love the IDs interior turn leds to work with CarPlays navigation.
I wouldn’t bet on existing VWG cars getting support for it. It’s looking like the head units need hardware to support the instrument cluster projection system.
Also, VWG has a pretty bad track record with adding major new software features to cars that they already sold. They like to use new toys as a way to get people to buy / lease new cars.
Their game is basically “Want the latest thing? Get the latest model year.”
