For the data nerds, I’ve compiled some quick stats on the tournament. Title pic is raw data. I’ll post the filtered data in comments.

I was already afraid you had forgotten about the recap, but it’s finally here! This community and especially the OOTY tournament was honestly my favourite thing from Lemmy this year. I am already looking forward to next year’s edition. Meanwhile, keep up the good stuff anon6789!
I totally agree with this. It was a ton of fun. I feel I have been logging into lemmy less and less, but this gave me something to be excited to log in for a couple of times a day.
I’m much the same. I’m worried it’s become too Reddit like that it’s feeling like a copycat with only 1% of the content and nothing to differentiate it.
I don’t have enough knowledge or experience to stand out in r/superbowl, but here it’s small enough I can focus on you all as individuals, so I try to do that, upvoting and trying to respond to everyone, take requests, and things like that. If this is going to be a small group, you need to feel heard and to feel a part of what’s going on.
Everything outside of this group feels like it’s all politics, tech, or news I could get anywhere. This could be a place for niches to thrive, but it feels much of the energy went into recreating the big subs, which isn’t going to work without the volume. The socialists and communists are the only groups I see taking advantage of this on Lemmy. AI art is also doing pretty well from what I see in my feed.
It has me a bit worried about Lemmy’s future, but c/superbowl is still growing steadily. As long as I feel I can keep finding new things and I keep seeing new people popping up in the comments, I’m cool sticking with this.
Yeah, Superbowl is really what makes me stay on lemmy, because of its uniqueness. I like the memes and stuff, but I can find those on Reddit too; same with politics. Meanwhile many, to me, more interesting communities have basically died. Back in july there was a lot or activity on the Netherlands community; now that’s almost gone completely. This means I’ve been lurking more and more on Reddit.
Your point on niche communities is interesting. However I don’t think many other niches could really thrive with Lemmy’s userbase. I think the thing with this community is that it has things for “normies” to enjoy (the cute owl pics), as well as fun things to learn for the dedicated owl nerds. This is not the case for other niche community like specific games, where you will not look at or engage with if you don’t play the game yourself.
I myself came here for the cute owls and stayed for the owl knowledge, and I’m slowly getting more and more stuck in the rabbit hole (or Burrowing Owl burrow). I don’t know how many others have this experience, but I feel like this way many people who didn’t care for owls are now part of c/superbowl. Which is amazing, but I fear that this may be hard to replicate with other communities. What we need is probably Spez removing downvotes or something as stupid, to get more users and to get other niches really going.
I’m really thankful for you and this community, and the positivity from the community. I only lurked on Reddit, but here I’ve actually posted something (the bfo propaganda), and the reception was good. It didn’t get many upvotes, but then others started with more propaganda, which was quite nice. I have some anxiety problems, so posting was a big deal for me, but I’m definitely going to do it again when I have something to post!
I do feel there is some growth still. I’ve noticed recent communities made for both my state and also the nearest city. They’re not very active, but they’re still getting posts. Keeping it viable until the next thing that gives inertia to Lemmy I feel is crucial. A good number of us have stuck around the last 6 months and are still contributing. The next big influx of people will have a much more lively scene to join than was the case this summer, and there is much greater choice in apps and better server stability then back then, so the initial experience for the next band of refugees will be better.
I haven’t really gone back to Reddit except for certain things like product reviews. I don’t go to just browse anymore. If I don’t like what else is on Lemmy, it’s largely just a bigger volume of the same there.
We need more people to see posting is no biggie here. It’s a small audience in most comms, so you can practice and hone your posting style without much issues. I used to get maybe a dozen likes, but I learned how to address you guys in a way that got attention, learned what things get you more perked up, and things like that. It’d be great to get another person or 2 contributing regularly here, but if people just step up anywhere, they can build momentum. I didn’t know anything about leading a place like this, but I saw someone had to do it.
I’ve been trying to contribute some to the anime comms too, I can’t believe how dead they are here. With the new multi-community support in the app I’m on, it makes it easy to group all the communities into one virtual one so I can stay on top of where the talk is and try to keep it going. But find yourself a sub that needs help and just do it. It doesn’t have to be every day like I do, but keep starting new threads somewhere. If all the people subbed here would make 1 post even every 3 days, that’s a lot of posts.
But I’m keeping my effort concentrated here. It’s enough work, I enjoy it, and you all enjoy it. So as long as things don’t turn into poo here, you’ll still have this to keep you coming back.

Nah, holiday schedule just has me out of whack. I fell asleep at 5pm yesterday and woke up at 5 am even though I have off today, so I figured I may as well do it while I was up already.
People really got passionate about it in the second round. After the weak reception to the announcement and the first day of voting I was worried, but it picked up momentum and held it.
It was hectic, but now I’ve got an app that does drafts, so I can get much more done ahead for next time and maybe we’ll have actual polling next year too. I look forward to it as well.
Polling would definitely be nice to have!
I didn’t feel there was necessarily any pressure to vote based on who was already winning or losing, probably because there’s nothing really at stake, but it would be nice to rule it out.
