I managed to finish the story last night and I’m still trying to figure out how I feel about everything that happened but here’s some fresh thoughts about Slow Shock.
I think I like this event over all - story was interesting and had a clear purpose (unlike some of the previous ones that came and went without much progress happening). We got some backstory, both for the characters and the world, we got drama, action and intrigue.
It wasn’t perfect, obviously. There’s the usual MICA indecisiveness whether to write a bunch of competent characters doing their thing or a Hollywood action flick with people acting stupid for the sake of plot. It wasn’t the worst instance of such writing in the history of GFL but it’s here.
Another thing I’m not too sure about is:
spoiler
RPK-Ange
I guess it’s something that shouldn’t surprise me as a possibility, since that’s kind of Paradeus’ deal but part of me feels like
spoiler
Ange dying
would be a better choice. Maybe. I’m still mulling this over and flip-flop between both options since it may lead to some interesting scenes in the future.
I’m also a bit sad for all the trash Nytos that survived the mission but didn’t escape the bombardment - sure they’re killers but this event (and especially post credit stages) show not only how they were forced to do it but also that some of them weren’t completely on board (reactions after being cut off from the lake of conscience, big and little sister saying ‘screw that’ and escaping through a secret tunnel etc).
To be fair, I’m a sucker for (relatively) innocent characters getting screwed over so that was always going to work on me anyway.
New gameplay additions were decent enough - not overly complex nor infuriating. UX stages are surprisingly easy without min-maxing or having to deal with tons of puzzle solving (not that I mind the latter but “puzzles” in GFL are rarely good or interesting).
It was a pretty smooth sailing compared to some previous events.
That’s all I have for now. Story was fun, now time to farm limited drops.
