I’m playing through the original version and can’t understand why this was necessary. So much of the game looks fantastic, it’s like a couple small things that are noticeable like wet hair but nothing worth paying for a remaster. And considering God of War just dropped their dlc for free this looks really shitty from Naughty Dog. It seems like they are running out of ideas or something since we haven’t seen anything new even for existing universes in so long.
So I have a different take on this. They probably saw sales slump as average consumers are buying less PS4 games. Since The Last of Us is a PS4 game that means people on PS5 arent going to give it a look, even if you can upgrade the version to 60fps or whatever. So Naughty Dog just upgraded it a bit, made it an official PS5 SKU, and threw in a Roguelite mode that is probably well worth a $10 upgrade.
So for those that already have the PS4 version, it’s only $10 if you want the new mode. And for those that never played it, they can get it new for PS4 for $60, used for like $20-30, or brand new on PS5 for $70. Therefore, I don’t think this is a true “double dip” tbh. Also, it was widely reported that new hires were the ones to do the upgrade and new mode as a way to train them on their internal tools. This way their internal team is up to speed and can take the knowledge learned to their next project, which is TLoU3 or the rumored Sci-Fi project (or both).
Also, in terms of not having any new ideas, they did have a grandiose new idea in TLoU: Online, but they flew too close to the sun. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of that work goes into a tailored down traditional online mode comes with TLoU3 that isn’t a live service.
Problem is it’s not a $70 game when it’s designed for last gen hardware and only getting graphical and maybe minor updates otherwise. The part 1 remake was ground up and completely changed the experience compared to what it was at launch. That’s not worth paying more than launch pricing for this upcoming remaster. Again to my point god of war dropped their expansion for free understanding the graphics were just fine and they didn’t need to fiddle with other shit just to squeeze out sales on a 2 year old game.
I’ve heard the rumors as well but with all the effort they lost towards the live service game that was recently cancelled I’m skeptical how much progress has been made on a new title. But I also heard this same rumor for the part 1 remakes and remasters as well, so I’m not sure how much is valid vs company pr.
