Pre-orders used to come with sweet incentives, since there’s otherwise no reason to do it. I’ve got cool tins, coins, plushies, and even a working mini harmonica from pre-orders I did in the 2000’s. Now they give you nothing but a few in-game items if you’re lucky. I have no idea why people even do it anymore.
The ONLY two advantages to preordering now are game preloading, and exclusive preorder digital stuff for a game you were already going to buy at full price day one anyway.
I preorder FFXIV expacs because it comes with an accessory to make leveling jobs wicked fast. So it’s worth it and a game I know I will play. Other games I wait. Not only do I know it won’t be my primary game, but I know not all games are going to be great.
The second is a decent follow-up, too. There’s some things I wish it hadn’t changed while others I wish it had changed more, but honestly, I enjoyed playing it. A lot. Even the DLCs, though they are just more of the same and most will feel it’s too samey at that point.
The first one is a decent game.
But it also went to $20 extremely fast. Pretty much by itself, that takes the pressure off of rushing to buy it.

Rule 1: Never pre-order

I pre-ordered a game once. It came out 09NOV2010.
Still haven’t played it. Probably never will. The HD remaster is on steam now with mixed reviews.
Never made that mistake again.
/me cries in “Starlink: Battle for Atlas starter pack for Switch” at full price…
I managed to buy mine on sale but not soon enough to get cheap parts… Waited out and found a bulk load being sold for mega cheap at a local warehouse.
The only Mario series that gets more than rare 33% discounts
