I have been thinking which of the two should i use. If i understand fully i can still browse lemmy instances on kbin. And i can even check out mastodon users on it.

If this is the case, why would anyone choose lemmy instead of kbin? I assume there must be another aspects i don’t know of?

For me there are 3 reasons for choosing Lemmy over Kbin.

    1. Kbin has karma system.
    2. Kbin is based on PHP.
    3. Comments on Kbin magazines when using copy url to fediverse are not public, but locked behind login.

Why do you count PHP as a point against Kbin?

He’s probably had to work with php in the past and holds a grudge. I certainly do

I do not want to touch a single line of code in PHP. Even brainfuck is more attractive than PHP

Have you used PHP 7+ before? It’s surprisingly ergonomic, much more so than earlier versions.

There’s some debate in regards to PHP being an insecure language. Might have to do with the fact that over 65% of all websites run PHP (WordPress), and there have been a string of high-profile vulnerabilities in the news in recent years. Not making a claim either way, but could be why it was listed as a negative.

PHP is as secure as it’s developer makes it. There are excellent frameworks out there that make security simple. And then, there is WordPress.

Historically, it’s been known for its security issues and vulnerabilitities.

Lemmy also has a Karma system I think, on Memmy I can see my karma on the account tab
