In its research (link opens pdf), the human rights watchdog warns that “authorities in Croatia, France, Germany, Poland and Romania, among others, have or have attempted to extradite or deport asylum seekers who had fled persecution in the North Caucasus to seek asylum in European states, thereby denying them the right to international protection.”

That’s like saying the fled Jews should have gone back to change Germany from within during WW2.

Is it though? Are Russians that fled Russia comparable to a minority ethnic group that has been specifically targeted by majority ethnicities for being “the outsider” for centuries, the same? Or did you just make a false equivalence?

        1. This article is about an oppressed minority ethnic group (North Caucasus muslims) fleeing Russia.
        2. The German Jews were fully equal German citizens before the Nazi takeover.
        3. Your comment reproduces the Nazi propaganda that Jews weren’t really a part of German society for centuries.

          1. fair point, Russians do target specifically all their minority groups for the SMO.
          2. Under the law maybe, but antisemitism was also normal and more outspoken. And this point is in contention with point 1 isn’t it?
          3. No I didn’t

            @Rubber Duck

Russians do target specifically all their minority groups for the SMO.

Apart from not sharing your opinion, what we have in Ukraine is a war. It’s called a war.

But if you think that it’s great to be in Russia, just go there and apply for Russian citizenship. I heard they are looking for new citizens. Good luck.

Whoa there buddy! I’m sorry you probably misunderstood my intention.

Ukraine is at war, Russia has an SMO, the distinction matters a lot actually.

In an attempt to explain why words matter:

              • The Russian law prohibits a lot of things to the government when they are not at war.
              • For this reason they need duma approval to declare war.
              • Beiing a dictator you look for ways around inconvenient laws, hence their choice to make it a “special military operations”. This allowed Putin to do what he wanted, albeit with some limitations.
              • This is also why the sham referenda where used to declare the occupied areas “Russian territory”… as this allowed the Russian army to send conscripts there.
              • Putin realised he had to be carefully as the last round of drafts was very unpopular, so Russia moved to volunteer and voluntold basis to fill the ranks of the units in the SMO. Which is sadly going well enough to keep up with the losses the Ukranians are inflicting.

              Ukraine on the other hand:

              • is at war, meaning a lot of laws on their side are invoked that automatically spring into action during time of war. (Like being able to restrict fighting age men from leaving the country, suspending elections, being able to force private companies to accept government contracts etc.
              • The war is existential for Ukraine.
              • From my western perspective safe at home, I also think of it as 2 countries at war, mostly.

So no I won’t be going to Russia that you very much. I’ll be donating to Ukranians and pressuring my elected officials to do more for Ukraine, and also important ask then to voice publicly they think Ukraine should WIN. The half drivvel “we will support as long as it takes” needs to be replaced with, we will give Ukraine everything we can to help them win their war.

I hope this clarified why I used SMO in the context of Russia and Russians. In all other context I find the term from kings and generals very appropriate: Russia’s unprovoked war of aggression.
