It’s been a long time since I read the book, but as I recall the tonal difference is… stark. The musical touches lightly on the conflicts of the book, but in a campy melodramatic Broadway sorta way. Very saccharine compared to the much heavier political bleakness in the book.
Well, having only seen it in pieces via bootlegs, I can believe underestimate the syrup levels lol.
