I like that analogy a lot! As somebody whose family hosts a potluck for basically any reason (or even no reason), that would be an odd occurrence.

I can only speak to my experience, but since starting this community, I have read fewer and fewer of the “popular” series on reddit in favor of what others here have been posting. I have found that reading the series that others here are reading has made it more fun because it gives us something to actually talk about.

Something I was very aware of when starting this community was that when the number of posters is small, the chances that our reading lists overlap is pretty small. So, my reading list has changed a lot since people have been posting here. Basically now, whenever I see a new user make a post of a series here, I try to quickly catch up with whatever series they posted about so that I can engage with them. If nobody responds to their initial posts, then what motivation do they have to keep posting?

It has meant that I have left some series behind. However, I haven’t really missed them all that much. The weird, obscure series that have been shared here have been really interesting. It has exposed me to whole genres that I likely wouldn’t have gone out of my way for before. It has also been a contributing factor to the decreased amount of time I have had for light novels lately (hoping to fix that soon with the potential migration of the [email protected] community).

Thanks for the shoutout to [email protected] . Everyone is more than welcome to have a look around and if someone has an interest to maybe start reading some light novels feel free to ask for recommendations. Visit the motherland of many manga and anime so to speak and get back to the roots :) I could also imagine a weekly/monthly comparison collaboration thingy with the anime and manga communities to compare the differences between versions if there is interest.

The thing I see with any form of media is that the more popular something is (doesn’t matter if it’s a manga, anime book, movie, music or whatever) the less corners are there where people could get caught at and find a fault with. In food terms, It becomes a homogenised mass that loses most of its flavour but also any strong tastes that some might not like. Sometimes I like this kind of offering, but my tastebuds would degenerate if that would be everything I consume.

For my media consumption I like to try stuff that gets recommended to me it it sounds remotely interesting to me. Even if it turns out I don’t like it, I come away with it with more appreciation with the stuff that I like.

Yes! I will give a bit of thought about the best way to do this. The different medium go through content at different paces, so doing something like a rewatch like /r/anime does with 1 episode/week would be painfully slow if you tried to match with the manga/LN pace. On the other hand, doing a LN volume per week might be too fast for casual anime watchers to keep up with.

We should definitely chat though because this is the power of having a smaller community; it can be tighter-knit (especially when the mods are active, unlike the remaining mods over on ml).

My initial thought was to do this when a series (or cour) ends. If an average show goes through 3 LN volumes in 12 episodes that would average out to one volume per month. I think that is an achievable goal even for casual readers that are interested to participate. The con would be that this seasonal rhythm doesn’t exactly foster discussion and participation. So maybe something in the middle be feasible. Either a monthly post where the difference in the past month could be discussed, or series specific post after each arc or thematic break.

Another question would be which series would be chosen. Does everyone pick their own, or should there be a poll before a anime season starts. In regards to that I would think that as long as the community is so small it would be better to chose only one series via poll so that there is some potential for discussion and not everyone doing it for themself.

At the end of the season the results could be consolidated into a Megathread for future reference. Or maybe even an external Wiki. If I find a way to not doxx myself I could throw one up on my server.
