Press release of the Parliement itself

  • Safeguards on general purpose artificial intelligence
  • Limits on the use of biometric identification systems by law enforcement
  • Bans on social scoring and AI used to manipulate or exploit user vulnerabilities
  • Right of consumers to launch complaints and receive meaningful explanations

On Wednesday, Parliament approved the Artificial Intelligence Act that ensures safety and compliance with fundamental rights, while boosting innovation.

The regulation, agreed in negotiations with member states in December 2023, was endorsed by MEPs with 523 votes in favour, 46 against and 49 abstentions.

It aims to protect fundamental rights, democracy, the rule of law and environmental sustainability from high-risk AI, while boosting innovation and establishing Europe as a leader in the field. The regulation establishes obligations for AI based on its potential risks and level of impact.

We definitely need to be proactive on this, though the bullet points made me wonder what the Americans will do -

    • Safeguards on general purpose artificial intelligence to ensure the billionaires profit while everyone else suffers.
    • No limits on the use of biometric identification systems by law enforcement, particularly when the suspect has the appearance of someone who’s been exposed to sunlight for slightly too long.
    • Social scoring and AI used to manipulate or exploit user vulnerabilities, particularly to eliminate profit-damaging urgent medical procedures
    • Right of consumers haha haha haha you fucking what?

As an American I can confidently say the only thing our gov probably wouldn’t do (aside from actually regulating industry) is the first half of point 3. Sounds too Chinese. But the rest is totally plausible.

What if it was made to sound more Russian instead? That might work.
