If I had to guess, maybe to reduce the sound profile while ghost-pedaling? I’ll be frank that I’ve never used a belt-drive bike, since the good ol bicycle chain Just Works ™. But I’m informed they do cut down on meshing noise, if that’s important.

I was kind of making a joke about belts being nice and hub motors being meh, but as far as I know the main benefit of a belt drive is a lack of maintenance and road grime compared to a chain which can be nice for commuting (especially in bad weather: no chain to rust).

I’ve gotten grease stains on the cuff of a lot of my work pants because chain. One day I want to get a belt but it’ll be paired with an IGH and maybe a mid drive.

I’m eyeing the kindernay xiv. The spoke cage that the actual hub mounts in to would enable me to continue using the second set of rims for winter tires without needing a second ~$2k igh, and they have the right hand up/down thumb shifter listed on their site now instead of the left and right separate shifters. It’s also thruaxle and the shifter is connected with hydraulic lines which is pretty cool. I don’t know if the outer cog is a standard or proprietary part though so belt compatibility is unknown based on whether the belt gear can be swapped in. pending email response on that.

I need infinite money cheats in real life. My choice belt ebike setup would either be my current bike with the xiv or a new pinion mgu hardtail if I could afford either.

Same. Mine also have frayed ends, due to occasionally getting chomped by the chainring. But I don’t suppose a belt drive would address that; I should probably get a Velcro strap lol
