I left halfway through An American Werewolf in Paris. London was a friggin classic. Paris was poorly acted, treated the audience like idiots, and was campy as hell (and not in a good way).

It’s a shame, because that could’ve been a great franchise.

To this day, that was the only movie that’s ever made me leave the theater. Like…the audacity. And I really wanted to like it because Tom Everett Scott was terrific in That Thing You Do! and Julie Delpy was wonderful in Before Sunrise and Killing Zoe. John Landis said about Paris, “I was really disappointed when I saw that film, I thought it was lousy.”

But I dunno…maybe Landis being forced to bear witness to his much beloved film receiving such a pathetic sequel is a small comfort for me since his direction led to the deaths of two kids and Jennifer Jason Leigh’s father, not to mention hastening the end of New Hollywood and giving rise to unoriginal, formulaic films and their endless sequels these days that are too heavily influenced by studio heads and never seeming to stay true to the artists’ visions.
