    So first I read “orphan grinder” and expected some factory scene. Then I thought maybe it’s an orphan, grinding. Nope. Then I actually read organ, and got confused because I didn’t see anything grinding intestines and shit. Then I thought maybe it’s the musical instrument. Nope. Now I’m just confused.

      A “street organ” or a “barrel organ” was an early automated instrument where the operator would simply turn the crank and the device would output music. The cranking motion was colloquially called “grinding,” I believe because it resembles that of a meat grinder.

      Here’s an example of one in operation, though I think the one in the video is from a later period.

      They were often used by the underclass as a way to earn money on the street much like the hurdy-gurdy was in much of Europe during the middle ages.

        Aaah, it makes much more sense now, thanks! I’ve heard the term “barrel organ” before but somehow I didn’t make the connection. Also, the kid covered most of it so I didn’t even know what that wooden thing was meant to be. Thanks for the clarification.
