Both owlets have left the nest (sorta) and have flown off to nearby trees.

They’re still going to stick around for a few months as the get eased into surviving on their own, so the parents are still bringing them food and they’re roosting with each other much of the time, but they’re starting to fly further and learn to do more things on their own.

Here is a timeline of their major developments:

2024 Milestones:

12/20/2023 - The Great Horned Owls have been frequently visiting the nests since September.

1/2/2024 - First Great Horned Owl egg is laid at 3:04 pm ET.

1/6/2024 - Second Great Horned Owl egg is laid at 4:16 pm ET.

2/5/2024 - HH5 hatched at 10:09 p.m.

2/8/2024 - HH6 hatched at 3:00 a.m.

3/23/2024 - HH5 branches for the first time leaving the nest at 1:52 pm ET

3/26/2024 - HH6 branches for the first time leaving the nest at 7:52 am ET

4/01/2024 - HH5 and HH6 fledged the nest tree

These last 90 days have been full of great moments with these 4 owls, but it has also gone by so quickly. I’ll remember these guys for a long time and I’ll have to check in still periodically to see if there’s updates how they’re doing, and to see if the parents come back to nest again next season. It’s been eye opening to see all an owl parent has to do.

I wish them all long, happy lives!

It’s going to be a strange feeling when I don’t see them any more after checking in on them a few times a week. 😐
