I cannot even pretend to speak on this subject in a remotely unbiased way. So I will just let the liberals in the comments tell us all what the official government version of events is.
They killed 100 people. Because 1930s America was cultural closer to 1930s Germany than to anything decent, and they just get off of on doing things like that.
Killing is one thing. They tortured them for years and allowed them to spread diseases in their community when a cure existed. Truly evil.
