An interactive storytelling adventure/mystery. Some walking required.

I had always interpreted the Walking Simulator label as a pejorative and never paid any attention to games described this way. Recently though I got The Invincible because some of the screenshots reminded me of old John Berkey paintings and I’m a total sucker for that kind of stuff, and I just absolutely loved it. I’m looking forward to trying out Firewatch.

Death Standing got this label, but I loved that game. Id walk anywhere in Sam’s shoes any day. Gotta keep on keeping on

I think the label originally was pejorative, but then fans of the genre took it as their own. Personally I like walking sims and I think it’s a hilarious way to describe them, but yes it was originally some neckbeard complaining about how as a genre they’re barely even games

And they are barely even games. Which is awesome. Sometimes I want to play a game, sometimes I want to watch a movie. Sometimes I want to do something in between

Didn’t the devs pull some shit with dmca notices?

This was years ago, but IIRC some youtuber used the N word while playing one of the studio’s games. The developers found out and sent the youtuber a dmca takedown notice for all their games, because f*ck racism and racist sh*tbags

      Edit: source from 2017

I agree with the premise of why the devs did it, but DMCA abuse is still DMCA abuse, and the letter of the law matters. They should have 100% found a different mechanism to make them pull the videos down.

I would’ve imagined a game developer doesn’t have any say over what someone says on their streams. Weird if they have that power

Yeah but it was kinda shitty from the devs, because they explicitly (on their webpage) gave everyone permission to post gameplay videos, and then dropped the DMCA on pewdiepie because he said the n word in a different video.

Not defending pewdiepie, but the devs shouldn’t have proceeded that way. At least they should’ve asked him to take the playthrough down instead.

Edit: people downvoting didn’t read this because they’re upvoting the shorter comment saying the same thing lol.

They also sold off to Valve Corp and fire a lot of people, leaving a few to work on Alyx VR.

Bit of a non sequitur, but I really miss the Idle Thumbs podcast :( hope those guys are doing well, I know some of them ended up at Valve

Idle Thumbs and Important If True feeds both sit fallow in my Overcast. I refuse to delete them in perhaps misguided hopes that one day a seedling will spring anew.
