Currently I play an Ibanez AEB5E acoustic which I defretted. The others in the stable are a Conklin GT-7, an Ibanez PCBE12MH acoustic, and a Lākland 55-94.

My recent jam is a Taylor 3/4 size acoustic/electric, which is pretty great. It’s the same size as a 3/4 acoustic guitar. I’ve always liked that scale for some reason. In the past I had a Stagg fretless, which I loved though it’s basically made from scrap. I played the heck out of it though - I love fretless basses and they’re hard to find. I still am kicking myself for not buying this fretless acoustic Alvarez I saw in Portland a few years ago. Also a custom 5 string Ibanez, which I got from my friend as a package deal with a fantastic Trace Elliot head/cabinet set. I didn’t really like the Ibanez though… action was too low to slap it right. My all-time favorite is this Peavey I bought used for $40, a P-Bass copy. Super slappy. I tend to like instruments I can kick around and drop them and not really care vs. ones I feel like I have to keep in a case.

Nice! I like nice things, but seldom can afford them. (The Lakie was a special case, and we’ve seen many miles, stages, and studios together.) My fretless Ibby was a back-door COVID special which was NOT fretless at the time. Its intonation was so damned sharp that my luthier/tech refused to touch it, so I ripped off the frets (nicely, with no tear-out), sawed reference lines in the binding, and left the slots open. (Folks like that bass better than my others, combined!) The small Ibby was payment for playing the Jerry Springer podcast - I had no acoustic at the time, and that was kind of a requirement for the podcast, so the band I played for bought me one! I bought the Lakie online from a guy on Talkbass. Many Kegels were practiced during that transaction, but it turned out to be one of my best purchases.
