Yeah reddit sync is slowly dying… many links give me a 404 error

Hopefully at some point they will break completely, and people will be so annoyed by the official app that they’ll start looking for alternatives.

Sync on Android for Lemmy is also giving 404 error to me for the last 4-5 days. I have been using Jebroa instead, which is not as good in my opinion…

I use liftoff… Are these others better? There weren’t but a couple options when I first got on lemmy…

I’m using Memmy, Voyager, and Mlem.

I started with Memmy, but then started favoring Voyager, which was said to be the closest to Apollo in functionality and design. Then i noticed that Voyager always omitted comments from a certain instance, so I’d only get one side of the conversation, so I switched to favoring Mlem, which I’m really enjoying at the moment.

Now that I’ve given it a try, I think that I would continue using Mlem even if Voyager fixed that particular issue. It has a really nice level of polish and hasn’t had any issues with crashing, unlike Liftoff or Thunder, which I’ve dropped completely.

Can you explain more about this Voyager comments issue you are experiencing? Voyager should not be hiding any comments.

When browsing comments on Lemmy, I would see what looked to be top-level comments that were clearly replies to another comment, but the comment it was responding to wouldn’t be displayed. After this kept happening, I decided to try viewing the thread through another app (i may have been using an account from another lemmy instance, which I’m guessing may be pertinent) and then I would be able to see the actual top-level comment that was being responded to.

Ahh, yeah different instances will do it, especially if it was Lemmy v0.18 vs 0.19.

Regardless I’ll keep an eye out. Thanks for the write-up!

Liftoff is awesome, but it’s not compatible with 0.19 so any post from instance with latest update will not load. I switch to Boost and while it has problem, it’s awesome too.

Liftoff’s main dev is busy with real life right now so development is on hold. Other options are quite good, it’s mostly up to personal preference

Eternity, also known unofficially as Infinity for Lemmy is another good one. It functions the same as the Infinity for Reddit client but for Lemmy instead. It’s still early in development but it has gotten much more stable.

          Hey, it’s you again!

More seriously, they just mentioned above they were not happy with Jerboa, which is why I didn’t mention it

I didn’t notice that but I never had any issue with Jerboa.

            Hey, it’s you again!

            Now, I also remembered you.

I would look into this. I use Sync for Lemmy and haven’t been running into any 404 errors.

Have you considered trying another instance? Lemmy.world can be a bit unstable from time to time

Being one of the biggest instances can definitely have some drawbacks. Sh.itjust.works has been pretty stable for me most of the time.

Yeah but lemmy.world is at least low-key backed by an EU company who seems to actually have the capacity to deal with privacy issues. The rest of the servers that I’ve seen really are mostly just individuals or very small teams which I have zero faith in even being good actors. I’m open to suggestions though.

I’m in the minority here but I legitimately would rather have my data in an instance where they have corporate backing (even if it’s still tied to volunteerism).

I just use Lemmy to comment fluff, so I don’t need a privacy hardened instance.

Unless you’re talking about the potential for smaller instances to spread malware or something?

Nah more concerned with small instances grabbing information and doxing folks. That type of crap. This account not so much, my porn account maybe lol…

Pretty sure Sopuli is Canadian run, unless their description is incorrect.

Oh wait, I just looked back at it and it doesn’t say the part about being a Canadian run Instance anymore, I could’ve sworn it said that last I checked.

Also their server IP is Finland, though since Lemmy instances are on VPS servers I guess that isn’t indicative, since they can end up being anywhere in the world.

From their sidebar “A general-purpose instance run by a Finn - everyone is welcome here!”

Maybe they are elsewhere than Finland, but that was my assumption
