But billboards are totally fine to stay, cus advertisers are not distracting you. Just the road / traffic signage is.

Live in a state that banned billboards. Usually forget till I go to a state that still has them but 10/10 do recommend ban!

São Paulo also have billboards and outdoor advertising banned and is amazing when you get used to a clean city skyline going somewhere else and see the pollution advertising cause.

I once saw a billboard off of i-10 in Houston (where there are sometimes up to 8 lanes of traffic plus an HOV lane in each direction) for a car dealership that was using a fucking QR code.

Billboards aren’t litterly on the highway, which these signs are. They’re actual road signs. You’re supposed to look at them, but you’re not supposed to be unduly distracted by them.

The point is that signs that are actually on the highway need to follow strick rules so they’re uniform, simple, and provide necessary information in an understandable, straightforward way.

You should get what you need from them at a glance, without much thought.

Billboards are junk off to the side of the highway that can be ignored. You aren’t trained to pay attention to them the way you’re trained to pay attention to road signs.

So, given the “Santa Sees You When You’re Speeding” sign, which parts of those six words are not simple and do not provide necessary information? How would you improve it?

This is fine. Amateur comedy from the Dept of Transportation isn’t really adding anything to my commute. I hope they don’t take away “Seat Belts and Vaccines both save lives!” though, I love the thought of that sign doubly pissing off so many of the dumbasses here.

If your local DoT was smart, they hired a young intern to write that shit. I actually know a young guy that did this for a while. Some of them were definitely charming.

But I agree, on the whole. They’re just dumb and condescending most of the time.

I’m okay with this. Those signs are at best mildly distracting and at worst very distracting. They should be off 99% of the time.

      Same thing with billboards.

      I’m not ok with this.

The objective of life isn’t for it to be the safest, cleanest, blandest, most sterile experience possible.

Agreed. But driving accidents kill millions of people and an environment where one small mistake can end in critical failure isn’t the place for some cheeky department of transportation employee to be testing their standup routine.

So take off the billboard (now often just videos) of corporations testing their marketing routine. At least these signs were on the road.
