Once a week I have to go to London for the day (there and back in a single day).

Once I get into London, I have to get the tube. One journey to my destination and then later in the day one journey back to the train Station. It’s all Zone 1, very occasionally 2. Can be any day, including weekends.

It’s £13 for a return on the tube (I just buy a ticket from the machine at the tube station) which seems excessive to me - over £50 a month for just 8 journeys. Is there a cheaper plan available?

Use a contactless card and oyster. It’s £2.80 each way. Paper tickets are more expensive, you’re also buying a travel card which gives unlimited usage all day within zone 1.

If you have an iPhone or Apple Watch you can set one of your wallet cards to be an ‘express travelcard’ which means to get on the tube you just hold your watch or phone up to the card reader at the tube station, no double click to load your wallet and no Face ID or unlock required.

That’s terrible, I didn’t realise you could be ripped off by buying tickets. I’ve always just used my phone since it was possible- added bonus that daily fares are capped.
