At least 10 people across four states — California, Colorado, Texas and Utah — have been made ill from an E. coli outbreak linked to raw cheddar cheese from the brand Raw Farm, according to health officials.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday that at least four people have been hospitalized and one person has developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can cause kidney failure.
“The true number of sick people in this outbreak is likely much higher than the number reported, and the outbreak may not be limited to the states with known illnesses,” the CDC said.
Raw Farm, based in Fresno, Calif., agreed to initiate a recall on a number of its cheddar cheese products, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

"Of even greater concern, inspectors found open gaps as large as a half-inch by two-and-a-half feet at air conditioner intakes on the roof of the (salmonella outbreak causing peanut butter) plant. Water stains were seen on the ceiling around the intakes and near skylights. The openings were above an area in which finished products were handled. Water leaks would be a problem because salmonella thrives in moist conditions.
A leaky roof is believed to have contributed to a 2007 salmonella outbreak in Peter Pan peanut butter."

The article is polite enough not to mention that the reason salmonella is on the roof of the peanut butter factory, in the first place, is bird shit. Bird shit is why rooftops have salmonella on them.

If stuff this egregious is making the news, and not getting fixed, it boggles the mind what else must be happening in food production.
I used to work for a major processed food brand, as part of document control for the suppliers…
So I’ve read the inspection reports for hundreds of companies who, like, produce raw ingredients or processed ingredients… even passing inspections had a lot of super gross questionable comments, and that’s just routine.
Let’s just say… I struggle to eat processed foods now… 🤮
Yeah, that’s terrible, I don’t konw how that’s cheaper than just hiring a roofer to install a shim and caulk around the air conditioner.
I don’t doubt that kind of thing isn’t happening all over the place too.
I get the feeling a lot of governments are cutting budgets for food inspection and doing it less often. My local government for example just stopped sending inspectors to look at retirement homes, and then cases of abuse and mistreatment went through the roof and the army had to be called in. I don’t even know how many other industries that’s happening in.
