Police officers detain a woman who laid flowers for Alexei Navalny at the Memorial to Victims of Political Repression in St. Petersburg, Russia on Friday, Feb. 16, 2024.

Russian authorities say that Alexei Navalny, the fiercest foe of Russian President Vladimir Putin who crusaded against official corruption and staged massive anti-Kremlin protests, died in prison. He was 47. (AP Photo)

Go to jail if you speak out against the president, BUT, there is a nice chandelier in a subway station.

Lol, that bit where he praised their grocery store prices was insane. The average American makes over 300% what the average Russian makes in terms of salary.

That guy has dogshit for brains.

Why even have a memorial if you can’t visit it and pay respects?

The Navalny memorial at the Wall of Grief is makeshift.

People are paying tribute to him there because the wall is a monument to Stalin era political persecution and Putin is basically doing the same shit.

As a honeypot to arrest dissenters just like they’re doing.

I’m not even sure how to define how self-satirical it is that they made a monument to the political victims of repression, which is now where they authorize any kind of demonstration if one is ever allowed, and it’s also the spot where they arrest everyone. It’s straight out of a joke.

Maybe she had her reasons. Maybe she have had enough of all this. Their government tries to cut out the courageous and leave only spineless brainless matter that doesn’t resist.

In a 2007 pro-gun rights video, Navalny presents himself as a “certified nationalist” who wants to exterminate “flies and cockroaches” – while bearded Muslim men appear in cutaways. He whips out a gun and shoots an actor wearing a keffiyeh who tried to “attack” him.

Yeah maybe overt Russian white nationalists shouldn’t be revered and their supporters shouldn’t be given the right to freedom of expression.

Oh great, so he’s a covert Russian white nationalist who only wants to exterminate Muslims in secret.

        Wait…

There being a bigger asshole doesn’t make an asshole a saint. I don’t buy Navalny’s 180 on his nationalist, islamophobe, and homophobe stances. And no liberal Russian I know (quite a few) does either. The western narrative of “Putin bad, Navalny against Putin, so Navalny good” is really strange. Given the chance Navalny could have been the next Hitler. Have you ever watched/listened to the stuff that guy said?

If Biden sent Seal Team 6 after Trump, that would be a serious problem, and not because I revere Trump.

Im not sure how i feel about that, and this might be an unpopular take, but does everyone need an absolutely untarnished past to be able to be recognized for something? Or can we just accept that while not a perfect person, he is a pretty decent figurehead for anti-putinism?

White nationalism shouldn’t be revered, but the right to freedom of expression should be.
