It’s frustrating bcz everyone I know in real life doesn’t know who he is, and kinda doesnt care. But the outpouring of sadness online reflects how I feel right now.

It’s really sweet, and I’m glad people are paying their respects. This man basically made my childhood what it was. RIP Akira Toriyama

He was only 68? He’s been one of the biggest names in Manga writing/character design for over 40 years.

This is beautiful. Toriyama’s passing has affected me pretty hard. I never met him, never knew him, but I feel like a part of myself has gone to sleep forever and it’s hard to reconcile that I can’t express the joy he brought me to the ones that I love the most. This is such a tough loss for so many

Pathetic, really. Consumers pretending to care about creators…

Pretty sure most of those who now express “sadness” never knew and never cared about this guy, they just consumed his products. As soon as this “news” (old people die, who’d have thought) hits the fan they produce an artificial stream of fake emotions like automatons. And the next week everything is forgotten and it’s another pretentious event that produces faked feelings.

Think I’m harsh?? You can even prove yourself I’m right: Go back in time on the profiles of those who now shed “tears” - you’ll not find one single mention of this guy, not one word about him before his death. It happens all the time whenever some “celebrity” dies - suddenly the economy of attention produces fake obituaries and fake emotions in great numbers from people who simply couldn’t care less beforehand and will not care next week (very often next day).

Ask them about the still alive creators they care about now - what do they do to help those creators to thrive? Try to find any mention of one of those on their profile - I bet you won’t find anything. Crazy isn’t it? As if they only care when they can produce some attention for themselves in the wake of an arbitrary moment. Pathetic, really.

I give my condolences to the family and friends (real friends, not the fakers) of that guy.

You sound depressed and cynical. As if I cannot respect a person I didn’t know before after I learned what he has accomplished.

You must be really young if you think my respect for a person is not real if I have not posted about it online. That’s simply ridiculous.

Be careful you don’t cut yourself on all that edge.

Also fascinating that you seem to think the only people who can be sad about the death of one of the most influential mangaka are those who posted about him constantly. I’m curious; how often does one need to post about him? Daily? Weekly? Or is just one post a month sufficient?

“You guys didn’t support this creator when he was alive… all you did was consume his content so he could continue creating instead of getting an office job somewhere.” At least it’s not a take I’ve heard before…that supporting artists isn’t supporting artists…

“Why didn’t you support Akira Toryiama?!?!?”

Looks up Oh hey I was just playing some Dragon Quest while watching a blu-ray of the Saiyan Saga what were talking about?

If he’s asking why I didn’t mail the guy a check directly, well… hey if that’s the requirement than I’ve never supported any artist.

It is a normal human response to feel sad to learn that the author of something that you enjoy has passed away

We’re gatekeeping feeling sad that someone died now? People feel sad that the creator of one of their favorite shows died and are expressing that online, no need to bully them over it.

Not mentioning someone in their profiles doesn’t prove anything. I don’t mention any of my family, does that mean I won’t care when they pass?

How do you expect them to support the creator? Fly to Japan, shake his hand and give him 50 bucks? If they watch the show and share their enjoyment of it with others - they are supporting the creator.

You’re also not going to find many people talking about friends or family in that way before they die. Whether it is because a person takes their relationships for granted. Keep their private feelings, private. Or shows their love and appreciation in less public ways. There are many reasons you won’t often see what you’re saying is required to actually care for a person. Because it’s not a common way of showing care. Looking for and appreciating the (small) actions people do for those they care about is a much better way to see things. Viewing life and death through such a depressing cynical lens is pitiable. I hope you can one day find a less depressing and shitty view of things.

I say that with full understanding that there are people like you say getting some perverse glee about someone’s death to boost their socials off of but that is a tiny minority are closer to your view of society than the actual general person.

No matter where you go, you’re gonna run into toxic people. The question is the ratio to decent people, and if there are tools to deal with the toxic ones.

This shit basically hijacks every Lemmy thread though. If there’s a thread with more than 15 or so comments, you can pretty much guarantee it’s either edgy contrarian trolls doing their edgy contrarian thing, or most likely someone whining about how capitalism has ruined the color green or some shit.

I like Lemmy for what Reddit isn’t anymore, which is that it allows for great 3rd party apps to be used for it and they don’t force you to use some shitty official version of the website that might have or use.

But people are delusional if they think that Lemmy will be a bastion of freedom and hope and will be entirely different from Reddit. But that’s not entirely a good or bad thing. It’s a thing that has really good things with the bad things.

We should be realistic and not have unfair hope that this will be a perfect place. I like it here because they don’t force me to browse their content in one specific way. I do wish there were overall more people here so that there’s no content drought and empty posts.

Part of it is that the people here have an air of superiority for being in the secret techie club lmfao. It’s as annoying and tribalistic as the stupid “what time does the narwhal bacon?” bullshit from early reddit. I also think the whole concept just attracts shut-in tech types who know a lot about privacy and Linux, but aren’t very good at the whole social thing.

I just wanna say I feel bad you got piled on, it seems you are processing your feelings about this in your own way. Like that anime character who acts all tough (and seems inhumane) when something bad happens, but they’re not a bad person…

I think some commenters are right that someone’s comment history on Lemmy doesn’t 100% reflect everything they’re about

Thanks for your compassion although there’s no need for it. You are wrong about me like all the others but at least you show some respect. And I don’t care for that special mangaka or for manga at all (I’m here for comics, there’s so much more than manga) and still wish his family and his real friends all the best.

And the fakers in this thread really help me free my timeline of bullshit - I will drop their accounts in my block list and live happy ever after. I wish you the same ;)

Do you realize how influential his work was? Like JRPGs? Congratulations his artwork was the foundation for Blue Dragon, Chrono Trigger, and the Dragon Quest franchise.

Like Sonic The Hedgehog? Congratulations, Toryiama’s work inspired many of the tropes used in it
