hi, is there anyone else here who is disappointed with the speedrunning tools available for linux users?

i’ve tried livesplit through wine but i can’t get global hotkeys or autosplitters working, and speedrunning in general doesn’t allow for the leeway required to tab out, split, and tab back in. i did give this a shot but it seems like livesplit server is deprecated and the project never got any more work done. also tried livesplit one, but again i couldn’t figure out global hotkeys or auto splitting.

i used to use a tool called flitter but i would really prefer something more configurable like livesplit.

ok actually midway through writing this and looking for links to the things i’ve used in the past, i found this tool that does support global hotkeys. autosplitter would be nice, but it’s better than the rest.

i’ll still post this though - i’m curious if there are any tools/tips/tricks/etc others have to share.

Would runs on games running in proton be valid anyway? I imagine it would be classified as an emulator by speed running sites and there’s the possibility for bugs to be introduced only in the proton version

i don’t see why they wouldn’t be allowed provided you could demonstrate the game runs the same as windows, but also i’m not exactly at the level where i need to worry about the leaderboard cred lol.

I can demonstrate a case where there are weird proton specific bugs

Had my player model just not render in in human fall flat under a specific proton version the other day, all you could see was the shorts (which was admittedly very funny)

But fair enough if just doing it for fun, just strikes me as something they could end up being an issue

i think many pc games would be relatively lenient with this as long as you can reasonably demonstrate there are no beneficial differences with proton, especially lower on the leaderboard.

honestly i hadn’t given leaderboard verification much thought, but yeah currently i just speedrun for fun and just keep the times/videos for myself.

If they whine (pun not intended) make the moderators add a Linux category & proudly show off that you run games fast on a free OS.

i would guess that asking somewhere like here dedicated to linux would yield better results than speedrunning-specific communities because everyone uses livesplit. i also like asking this type of question on lemmy/reddit/etc because then someone else can find this if it gets an answer via search engine :)

honestly my frustration might actually be stemming from the monolithic nature of speedrun timers currently. livesplit is the best by a wide margin and does pretty much anything you could want it to do, so reasonably there are few competitors. livesplit also happens to not support linux, which is a little disappointing considering it is basically the de facto free and open timer software.

i truly appreciate you engaging with my post even if you didn’t have the answer i was looking for. pleasant interactions with strangers makes up most of my enjoyment from lemmy!
