Dozens of members of the neo-fascist, white nationalist group Patriot Front marched through the streets of Austin Saturday. The group did not announce the demonstration in advance, leaving no time for opposition groups to mount a counter-protest. It was the largest public gathering of the group’s members since they held a similar march in Washington, D.C., on May 13.

I live in Austin and this is the first I’ve even heard about this happening, meaning they didn’t exactly make waves. Ignoring these guys is the best strategy. They want counterprotests so they can try to rile them up and try to draw attention. They thrive on attention, so we should focus on trying to defeat them politically while ignoring them as much as possible

I think response needs to be exceedingly lopsided. Either nobody pays attention to it, or a counter protest group of significantly larger size shows up.

If they’re protesting a specific place or event, yes, show up in force to show solidarity. If they’re just out there randomly walking the street like this, thinking people will feel intimidated, ignore that shit

Nonsense. Just need voter turnout to skyrocket enough to overcome gerrymandering to take the state-wide offices. Then we can work on fixing the gerrymandered districts and voter supression.

I fail to see how electoralism will take care of Patriot Front and their shithead ilk

They’ve been emboldened by far-right candidates winning elections. Gerrymandering districts has contributed to those wins, by forcing the primary candidates to be more hard-line than the rest, as they don’t have to compete for moderate voters in the general. Fixing the elections will snap back to reality the fact that these extreme views are not shared by the majority of society.

I truly wish I was capable of that level of optimism
