Falconry would be the worst midlife crisis because you have to be so serious about it. They don’t fuckin play - you have to do a 2 year apprenticeship under a more experienced falconer before you can be on your own. You can’t even get a bird until you’ve taken a test, built facilities, bought all the equipment, and passed an inspection. You can’t be like, “hold up, I’ll be back in a few years with a falcon and then I’m starting a cult, just be patient.” That’s not a crisis, that’s going to bird college.

(Full disclosure, everything I know about falconry came from a Winter Soldier fanfic, but I just looked and it’s all true. And very intense.)

I’m a falconer, this is true for the US. But you are able to have a bird as an apprentice. But ya, the quickest I’ve seen someone go from nothing to bird was like 10 months. In some countries like the UK you can just go buy a bird. I would not recommend it but it is legal.

Oh that seems like a terrible idea for a lot of reasons, not least of which is that there’s no way people haven’t abandoned birds after realizing they were in way over their heads. Wtf, UK?

You’re right. I know because all of that is what a falconer told the audience at the renn faire last year.

Somebody tell me if there’s a non-religious, non-musk techno(/transhumanist)-cult. They can have my head to cryopreserve and test with.

It’s either that, or mole people for me. But I half expect them to charge expensive rent after hearing the prices for that one building in Alaska (Whittier).

Let me know if you find one. I’m down to join a cult if it has free rent. No furries do not count.

Gotta be real with you, you’re going to have trouble finding a non religious non-musk transhumanist techno cult without furries.

Have you considered joining the Legion of Trekkies?

The trekkies are giving me shit for liking Discovery man. I’m going to start my own Trekkie cult and push for a 6th season!

I’m a Trekkie who likes Discovery. You’re welcome on our Lemmy.world Star Trek subs. After all, we have my fellow treasured mod Stamets got his name from Discovery.

Ah, fuck. I can’t believe you’ve done this.

If you just mean a cult in general (or furry molepeople?), no.

For cryo/cyborg, that might be somehow a step better than billionaire involvement, but still really questionable. Probably not though, too personal and not something that I’d expect to work out for me (I am a shut-in). I mean unless it was like some weird med-sci student or gayspacecommune thing that just has a lot of furries as a secondary thing.

I could see having my brain hooked up to some kind of drone body or even emplaced (some sort of station, also in either case I’d still want sensory information), so I would expect my social life to go unchanged. If living roombas could have personal lives in the future, I don’t think I would not be one of them.

Look, you’re early on the transhumanist cult, that’s the long and short of it. You can hop on the early-adopter Musk train, or you can wait a couple decades for the real talent with staying power.

My midlife crisis purchase is probably a $100k USD piano I can’t play very well when a $1000 digital would probably do just fine and not annoy the neighbors in adjacent apartments.

So is a loaded sports car more commonly associated with an American male’s midlife crisis.

Ya, like $100 for a staked bow perch. You’ll really want a block for a falcon though, those are a bit more. Custom turned blocks are several hundred bucks. A lot of people make their own though for much cheaper. Affixing some AstroTurf onto a plant pot gets you 80% of the way there.

I’d say you were taking my post too seriously, but that’s awesome, so I don’t care. Thanks!
