Although local chapters can be ass, fraternities take this sort of thing very seriously. There’s a bad reputation of them because of former partying and hazing that they are trying desperately to overcome.

If for no other reason than liability. They need to compartmentalize the blowback when a chapter fucks up, and being able to cite rules that they’ve enforced in the past is very helpful. While there is a certain level of cynicism involved, it does have a mild moderating effect when the chapters know there are limits to how far national will back them up.

Not sure how it is now but the chapters in the South of the one I was in 20 years ago were still pretty damn racist. They were surprised we let in black people. While they did not officially exclude them, they probably did not make it too welcoming.

They were chanting “hit the showers” (to prove how pro-Israel they are?? I guess???). So exterminating jews is fine, but getting in trouble for racist slurs is not.

One of them also was yelling about someone having a big nose. Make up your fucking minds.

On Thursday, counter protesters overwhelmed a small demonstration in support of Palestine, which had been peacefully assembled on the grassy area of campus. Counter protesters surrounded the fenced-off protest area and chanted things like “Hit the showers!” and “Your nose is huge,” the nonprofit news outlet Mississippi Today reported.

The jeers were especially vicious toward a Black female protester who separated from the rest of the protest encampment. Video showing a group of mostly white male counter protesters mocking her quickly went viral after they hurled taunts like “Lizzo!” and “Lock her up!” as she was guided away by police.

I really don’t understand these people.

Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA) proudly reposted the video and captioned it, “Ole Miss taking care of business.” Governor Tate Reeves tweeted his approval with footage of the counterprotests.

    “Warms my heart,” he wrote.

    Or those people.

I understand them quite well, but then I’ve been on the receiving end of such people in my life. It’s simple (non-sexual) sadism. They take great thrill in doing whatever they can to harm or denigrate others.
