I’ve posted something today and somehow Sync gives me notifications in my inbox for replies to that post, but when I open the post, it can’t find any. I can interact with them just fine in the inbox and in the browser. But in Sync on the post, the number of replies is shown to be 4, while the comment section states that no replies have been found.

This happened before and also in other posts with some replies, but I just shrugged it off as common federation issues. But the people replying can be found when I open the post in my browser under the lemmy.world instance, so it’s not due to my instance not finding them.

What’s happening here? This seems like a Sync problem. Should I move to another mobile frontend?

Comments are cached until you reload, to reduce the traffic. Open the comments view of the post and pull down to refresh, then you should be able to see them all.

I’ve just tested this and it didn’t work. I think this issue, of posts saying there is 1 comment when there are none, is some sort of Lemmy-wide issue. It drives me crazy, as it’s impossible to know whether posts have a comment or not without looking at each individually.

I think it’s a lemmy thing cus I’m on voyager and sometimes I’ll see an empty comment section when there’s like 1-5 comments sometimes

If you’re specifically seeing that there’s one comment, but there are none when you open the comments, The two most likely scenarios seem like the posts are for videos and you have pipe links hidden in the settings, or you have an active user blocked.

Does it happen with defederated instances too? Say if the LW user gets a reply from a hexbear user? (I think those are defederated, at least)

That I’m not sure about. Hopefully someone else can chime in.

Thanks. I’ve never blocked anyone, so it won’t be that. Could be the other thing

Why does this specific issue only happen to Sync then? I know that some things simply won’t load because they aren’t federated on your instance, which is not only a Lemmy-wide, but a Fediverse-wide issue. This only applies to some of the comments though, not the ones that I can see just fine in my browser.

It’s not just Sync, I find. I’ve had this issue with other Lemmy apps yoo

I don’t think it’s a Sync only thing. I get that you can see them in the browser, but since I started using Lemmy last year I have noticed the occasional number of comments not matching the visible comments - not just in Sync, tho. It’s happened to me while using the pwa and with other apps.

If you want to switch clients, go ahead and try them out - there are a lot of choices these days. I think LW has a variety of frontend options, too. Maybe one of those will be a good fit?
(I dunno, I really like Sync, but I’ve also installed and used just about every Android Lemmy app, and just end up coming back to Sync each time. Don’t get me wrong - there are some that are really good, but Sync is still my top pick.)

Doesn’t work. Sync just can’t load them.

Absolutely not. I have maybe one blocked account – and that was a spambot.

I also see this. The only way I can see the missing comments is by sharing the link to a web browser. Then the missing comments can be read in the browser.

Another variation of this issue is when a comment has collapsed replies. For instance, I see “3 replies” beneath a comment. When I tap it, it disappears, but no replies are shown. Again, I can read them if I share the link to the thread to a browser.
