I’m going through it rn for Proxmox, it’s a pain in the ass.

I think it was better a tad on ESXi, but VMware stuff is a non starter for me at this point.

I still dont understand broadcom’s move except for short term profits. All the kids used to use it, and now they’re on proxmox.

I work in public sector and we’re transitioning away from VMware now, as the people we recruit know proxmox and not VMware.

Just like adobe lets the kids get away with pirating - as that builds following - VMware was giving away single-seat.

In Proxmox VE 8 it was a one click once I enabled IOMMU. Before it required manually copying firmware and editing files.

I can really recommend XCP-ng. For me it strikes a pretty good balance of features and ease of use.

I eventually got the GPU passed through to the VM… it took about a day of following different guides. Then I tried the same thing on a container and it was about 3 mins work and it was in infinitely better experience with plex in a container instead of a vm

You can also pass the GPU to multiple LXCs that will share it vs it being tied to a single VM. I use VMs as little as possible in Proxmox these days.

Didn’t know you could share the pass-through. Thanks for that bit of info!

Can a container output video to a display? I have a container I remote into with GNOME on it, but would like to log into a console if possible.

That I’m not sure of. My proxmox host is headless and none of my containers have a GUI so I haven’t tried.
