She already had an event planned in Indiana today… One that was scheduled before Bibi said he was coming.

And isn’t she meeting with him personally as soon as she gets back?

Anyone will be less supportive than Joe. But she still takes AIPAC money too.

Yes, everything you said is 100% true. But hopefully this is the first of many future departures on her part from the prior administration’s coziness with Bibi’s regime and war.

I think she’ll end up governing like Obama.

Lots of progressive talk and it’ll sound amazing, but not really accomplish enough.

Which I mean, it’s the best we had since Obama… We just have to be loud early that we get a real competitive primary next year. Not some bullshit where no one runs or everyone drops 24hr before Super Tuesday and endorses the party favorite.

Historically for Dems we get the best turnout after competitive primaries. And the worst when voters feel they have no say in it.

We need to look at the primary as an advertisement for the eventual candidate. That’s the whole point, getting out there and selling your plans to the people.

Obama tried to accomplish a lot of progressive stuff, but Congress held him back from a lot of what he really wanted to do.

He also kneecapped himself by trying to work with the GOP when they made it clear they were unwilling to negotiate in good faith

Obama tried to pretend to be a progressive while accomplishing as little progression as possible.

Worked really well seeing comments about him. Apparently acting is more important than actions. Don’t forget to thank Obama for not codifying abortion rights…

I remember watching the news closely during his presidency, to hear what he had to say about the Dakota Access Pipeline and ensuing protests, and there was nothing. So, some weeks back I searched to see if there was anything I missed, and I found one instance of a person asking him about it, and he gave only generic responses. Like it was new info to him. Blew me away, because to me it was the most important topic around that time along with what we were doing/going to do in Syria. I don’t have a high opinion of the man, nor the system that makes people like him a figurehead.

Most people including those on Lemmy only care about appearances and acting skills of politicians. They are far too stupid to look at the actual actions of politicians.

Eh, I think it’s impossible to accurately judge a person’s entire intelligence, whether it be by the comments they make online or by their behavior irl. To me, ‘idiot’ is a bad word, worse than most.

That said, it does seem like people are too quick to believe the lies spouted by politicians. I suppose they will continue to believe them until said politicians’ policies affect them in a negative way (e.g. suddenly finding themselves homeless, which is a reality for more and more people these days).

"The purpose of having Netanyahu address Congress is to bolster his political standing in Israel and to quell international opposition to his war. I don’t feel like being a prop so I won’t be attending.”

Thomas Massie is the only Republican that has been consistently based when it comes to israel.

        https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2023/12/06/congress/massie-zionism-patriotism-house-israel-00130383

Massie voted against a resolution the House passed last week that affirmed Israel’s right to exist, citing language in the resolution that he said equated anti-Zionism with antisemitism.

Still awful on many other subjects but surprisingly better than almost all of congress when it comes to not being a Genocide puppet so give the man credit where it’s due.

Sorry I’m super tired and this title is fucking with me…. ‘Shows daylight with Biden’ what? What does that mean?

I think “showing daylight” is a metaphor for there being space between two things or ideas. So in a sense her and Biden’s views on Israel are not conjoined, hence “daylight” can be seen between them, like slats in a fence.

This makes sense thanks for the explanation 🙏 - also realised that the phrasing of the headline tripped me up. It says Harris shows daylight ‘with’ Biden which i think is completely the wrong word to use there, but i suppose they had written themselves into a corner by insisting on starting the sentence with ‘Harris’

I feel like they’ve butchered it as well - surely this phrase needs to take the form of ‘daylight’ (or not) between x and y? Use of ‘with’ tripped me up - daylight with Biden? I guess they meant that Harris skipping the address ‘showed daylight’ between her and Biden on this issue, but i would give them an F for phrasing tbh. Complete trainwreck if you ask me.

It’s not necessarily “wrong” the way they said it, but headlines can often have some tortured grammar.

They didn’t ask what the article was about, they asked what that specific (somewhat uncommon) term meant. Maybe they’re young, maybe they have a disability, maybe this is a 2nd language for them, etc…
